FAQs - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Rates

How much does a translation cost?

Rates may vary due to factors such as the subject matter, specialization of the text, turnaround, and file type (MS Word, PDF, InDesign, etc.). Personally, I usually charge per word of the source text, but sometimes this is not applicable considering the amount of work that may be involved in a text with very few words. Depending on the nature of each project, it is possible to charge per hour or determine a fixed amount for the entire project which, in any case, is also based on the number of hours considered necessary to finish the project.

I always send the final estimate to my clients beforehand so that they can give the green light to getting on with the job. If you want to know the price of your translation needs, get a free quote.

Turnaround

How long does it take to finish a translation?

It isn’t just about the number of words or pages, there are several aspects that come into play when setting a deadline, including the complexity, specialization, or format of the document. Generally, a translator produces somewhere between 400 and 600 finished words per hour. However, most experts translate 2000-3000 words per day. Why figures do not add up? Of course, it’s almost impossible to translate for 8 hours straight, and there’s always going to be a section in the document where some research is necessary, so that will slow the pace down.

In order to provide my clients with an accurate delivery date, I first need to review their document. You can safely send your files to me, and I will write you back with a non-binding estimate and a delivery date.

Delivery

How and when is the translated text sent?

Translators receive a wide range of file extensions, such as .doc, .docx, .odt, .pdf, .txt, .gif, .jpg, .png, .tif, .xls, .xlsx, .indd, .psd, .xliff… Depending on the format of the document sent by the client –in a word processor, a spread sheet, as a picture, or in any design software– the linguist can work with an editable text or directly translate from a picture, for example. However, having a text that we can edit is always preferred, as it makes possible to send the translated file as similar to the original as possible. If editing or design skills are necessary, there may be an extra charge for that, as it will take longer than simply delivering the plain text.

Personally, I always agree the delivery format with the client before starting the job in order to give an accurate quotation and delivery date. If you have any special formatting needs, tell me about them.
